Crypto Scams Targeting Churches and Faith Communities in Southwest Florida

โ† Back to Blog

There is a category of fraud known as "affinity fraud" โ€” scams that specifically target close-knit communities by exploiting the trust that exists between members. Churches and faith communities are among the most frequently targeted groups in the country, and Southwest Florida congregations have not been spared.

How Church-Based Crypto Scams Work

The typical pattern begins with a new member โ€” or someone who claims to be associated with the church โ€” who demonstrates remarkable financial success. They speak about it modestly at first: a chance mention of how a certain crypto investment has changed their family's financial situation. When others show interest they share more details and eventually introduce the group to an "investment opportunity" they want to extend to their fellow believers.

The framing is almost always explicitly spiritual: God has blessed this opportunity and now they want to share the blessing. The language of stewardship โ€” growing God's resources responsibly โ€” is used to create theological justification for investing. The social pressure to trust a fellow believer is enormous.

In many cases the initial investors do see returns โ€” because the scammer pays early investors with money from later investors. This is a classic Ponzi structure. Eventually the scammer takes the accumulated pool of funds and disappears.

Why Faith Communities Are Particularly Vulnerable

It is not naivety. It is trust โ€” which is a deeply positive quality. Faith communities are built on the assumption that fellow members share values and care about each other's wellbeing. Asking whether a fellow church member is running a scam feels like a betrayal of that trust. Scammers exploit exactly that reluctance.

The FBI has documented hundreds of affinity fraud cases specifically targeting religious communities. In Florida, the combination of a large retiree population with significant savings and strong faith community ties makes the problem particularly acute.
