Florida consistently ranks among the top states in the nation for crypto ATM fraud losses, and Southwest Florida is not immune. Lee County and Collier County law enforcement have issued repeated warnings about this crime pattern because it is devastating communities that are already navigating economic stress from hurricane recovery.
A crypto ATM looks like a regular bank ATM but converts cash into cryptocurrency and sends it to a wallet address you specify. This convenience feature is exactly what makes it so dangerous in a fraud scenario.
How Crypto ATM Scams Begin
The scam almost always starts with a phone call, a text, or an email. Common setups include: a utility company threatening to shut off your power within hours unless you pay through a "new system" that uses crypto ATMs; the Social Security Administration claiming your number has been compromised and you need to protect your funds by converting them to crypto; a grandchild claiming to be in jail and needing bail money sent through a crypto ATM immediately; or a lottery or sweepstakes claiming you have won but must pay taxes through a crypto ATM to receive your prize.
The caller keeps the victim on the phone during the entire process, walking them to the ATM, talking them through each step, and preventing them from pausing to verify anything.
The Key Warning Signs
Any business or government agency directing you to a crypto ATM is a scam. Utility companies do not accept crypto. The IRS does not accept crypto. Social Security does not accept crypto. Law enforcement does not direct you to make bail payments through a crypto ATM. There is no legitimate business or government payment scenario that requires or prefers crypto ATM payment.
The combination of urgency plus unusual payment method is the universal signature of this fraud. Real emergencies have real solutions that do not require cash-to-crypto conversion at a machine in a gas station.
What to Do If You Are at a Crypto ATM Under Pressure
Stop. Call a trusted family member or friend from a different phone. Call the Lee County Sheriff at 239-477-1000 or Collier County Sheriff at 239-252-9300. Do not complete the transaction. The machine will still be there after you have verified the situation โ but money sent through a crypto ATM cannot be recovered.
