The call comes in the middle of the afternoon. The caller ID shows a Washington D.C. area code. The person on the line introduces themselves as an IRS agent or SEC investigator. They tell you that your crypto wallet has been flagged for suspicious activity, that you owe back taxes that must be paid immediately, or that you are the target of a criminal investigation that you can resolve right now by transferring funds.
This is a scam. Let us be absolutely clear: no legitimate government agency will ever demand payment in cryptocurrency.
How Government Impersonation Scams Work
These fraudsters are highly sophisticated. They use spoofed caller ID numbers that display as legitimate government agencies. They have access to publicly available personal data โ your name, address, sometimes even partial Social Security numbers โ which makes them sound credible. They create extreme urgency: pay within the hour or face arrest, asset seizure, or deportation.
The crypto element is central to these scams because crypto payments are irreversible and largely untraceable. They direct victims to specific Bitcoin ATMs or direct wallet transfers, walking them through the process in real time to prevent second-guessing. Once the transfer is made the money is gone and the perpetrators disappear.
The Specific Agencies Being Impersonated
The IRS is the most commonly impersonated, usually claiming unpaid taxes or crypto reporting violations. The SEC and CFTC are impersonated in investment fraud scenarios. Local police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are also used. Recently we have seen Medicare and Social Security Administration impersonation specifically targeting elderly residents in Southwest Florida.
What to Do If You Receive One of These Calls
Hang up immediately. Do not engage with the caller, do not press buttons, do not provide any information. If you are concerned that there may be a legitimate issue with your taxes or investments hang up and call the agency directly using a phone number you find on the official government website โ not a number the caller provides.
If someone pressured you into making a crypto payment before you could verify their legitimacy call us immediately at 239-990-1615.
