The Pig Butchering Scam: How Scammers Are Stealing Millions From Floridians

โ† Back to Blog

If you have been on social media recently you may have noticed a new friend request from an attractive stranger who seems genuinely interested in getting to know you. They are warm thoughtful and after a few weeks of building trust they casually mention how well they have been doing with a crypto investment platform they discovered.

This is the beginning of the pig butchering scam โ€” and it is one of the most devastating financial crimes in human history.

What Is Pig Butchering?

The name comes from the concept of fattening a pig before slaughter. Scammers invest weeks or months building a genuine emotional connection with their victim before introducing a fake crypto investment opportunity. The longer they invest in the relationship the more the victim trusts them and the more money they eventually send.

In 2024 alone pig butchering scams stole an estimated 3.5 billion dollars from American victims. Florida consistently ranks among the top states for losses.

How the Scam Works Step by Step

Step 1 โ€” The accidental contact. You receive a text message or social media connection from someone who claims to have the wrong number or found your profile interesting. They are almost always attractive use professional photos and have elaborate backstories.

Step 2 โ€” Building the relationship. Over days and weeks they build genuine rapport. They remember details about your life ask thoughtful questions and never mention money. Many victims describe feeling like they found a true friend or romantic partner.

Step 3 โ€” The introduction. Eventually they casually mention how they have been making great returns on a crypto platform their uncle or financial advisor introduced them to. They show screenshots of profits. They offer to help you get started.

Step 4 โ€” The small win. They walk you through depositing a small amount. The platform shows impressive gains almost immediately. You withdraw a small amount and it actually arrives in your bank account. This is intentional.

Step 5 โ€” The escalation. Now they encourage you to invest more. Then more. The platform shows extraordinary returns. Some victims invest their entire savings retirement accounts and even take out loans.

Step 6 โ€” The slaughter. When you try to withdraw your profits you are told there is a tax fee or withdrawal fee required. No matter how much you pay the fees keep coming. Eventually the platform disappears along with every dollar you deposited.
