How to Safely Travel With Crypto Access: A Guide for Southwest Florida Snowbirds

โ† Back to Blog

Southwest Florida is snowbird country. Millions of residents split their time between Florida and northern states โ€” Ohio, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania โ€” every year. If you own cryptocurrency, your security setup needs to account for this travel pattern. Crypto does not care where you are, but thieves and scammers do โ€” and travel introduces specific risks that home-bound residents never face.

What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

Your hardware wallet is your primary self-custody device and it is small enough to travel with you. Bring it. But do not bring your seed phrase backup. The seed phrase stays in its secure physical location at your primary residence โ€” ideally in a fireproof, waterproof safe or metal backup plate. If your hardware wallet is lost or stolen during travel you can recover your funds from the seed phrase when you return home. If both the hardware wallet and the seed phrase are stolen simultaneously you have no recovery path.

Before you leave, take a photo of your hardware wallet's device ID (printed on the box) and store it in your password manager. This helps confirm authenticity if you need to compare it against a replacement device.

Using Crypto Securely While Away from Home

Use your dedicated clean browser on a trusted device. Never use public Wi-Fi without a VPN. Hotel networks, airport networks, and coffee shop networks are not secure environments for crypto activity. A VPN encrypts your traffic and prevents local network snooping.

If you access your exchange account while traveling, be aware that some exchanges flag logins from new locations and may temporarily lock the account pending identity verification. It is worth calling your exchange's support line before you leave to note that you will be traveling โ€” or simply avoid exchange account access during travel if you do not anticipate needing to transact.

Returning Home: The Post-Travel Security Check

When you return to your primary residence, do a quick security check. Confirm your seed phrase backup is where you left it and undisturbed. Check your exchange accounts for any suspicious login history from the travel period. Review your hardware wallet for any signs of physical tampering.

This is not paranoia โ€” it is the same discipline a good traveler applies to their passport and credit cards. The assets are just as real, and the consequences of loss are just as permanent.
